Portman Road, Ipswich. Saturday 16 December 2006. Ipswich Town are at home to Leeds United in the Championship (or the Second Division as it should more properly be called).
Before the kick-off there is a one-minute silence in memory of the five prostitutes that have been murdered recently in the Suffolk town.
Why?
What did they achieve? What did they contribute to society? Although the club's ground is in the red light district, how many of the 23,661 crowd that day knew any of the five women? How many had heard of any of them before their murders?
The way they met their deaths was horrible but the way they lived their lives was equally horrible.
They most certainly did not deserve a tribute usually accorded to war heroes or people of merit. By giving the women a silence the authorities demeaned the lives and achievements of those who really deserve it and for whom it should only ever be accorded - those who gave their lives in the service of their country.
